Life After the Jersey 3: Skill Building


Hello everyone, and welcome to Life After the Jersey: Navigating the Athlete Transition blog series. My name is Bryce Trail, the owner of Trail of Potential Mental Performance Consulting (TOPMPC), and I have partnered with Resilience Rally to provide tools to help collegiate athletes navigate the challenges of being collegiate athletes.


This third blog will look at the skills athletes can use to make the transition smoother during challenging times. There are challenges athletes face when making this transition: loss of identity, loss of commodity, and loss of structure.


This leads me to the first tool of the series: Who Am I Without My Jersey?

I find that reflection allows the athlete to understand the bigger picture, not just the challenges that they are currently facing. I want you to write these questions down and think them through using your own experiences.

  • What qualities existed before sport?

  • What parts of you grew because of sport?

  • What values show up across all areas of your life?


These questions help you understand the bigger picture of your involvement in sport and the qualities you can utilize after hanging up the cleats.

For example:

(Discipline) - reliability and follow-through;

(Competitiveness) - goal pursuit and high standards;

(Adaptability) - navigating uncertainty;

(Coach ability) - openness to feedback;

(Leadership) - communication and influence.


Just to name a few of the vast qualities created through sport participation.


The final part of today's blog is introducing some emotional regulation and coping strategies to the toolkit. Transition requires emotional tools that help athletes navigate uncertainty and maintain psychological flexibility.


Some of the emotional challenges that might stem from the transition from sport include

  • Feeling lost without structure

  • Comparing themselves to peers

  • Fear of starting over

  • Shame around not being an athlete anymore


These are very common amongst transitioned athletes. Downregulating the nervous system at this time is crucial; this is where breath work comes into play.


Box breathing is a technique I like to teach my athletes to help them center themselves in the present moment. It is a 4-second inhale, a 4-second hold, a 4-second exhale, and a 4-second hold. Done over 4 rounds, this allows blood pressure to decrease and the heart rate to settle. The time of the box can fluctuate to your decided comfort level.


The last tool in the toolkit today is thought labeling. This can be beneficial in the moment, helping you understand where your mind is. I like to break it up into 2 aspects: unproductive thoughts and productive thoughts. The inner critic is unproductive, and the inner advocate is productive. It is very normal during this time that the inner critic is the most common internal dialogue. This is called negativity bias, which is extremely common during this challenging time.


Bringing awareness to your internal dialogue allows you to understand what you are expressing to yourself in the present moment. In the next blog, we will be taking a deeper dive into some rebuilding routine exercises you can implement when going through your journey out of sport.
